Little wooden car
Location: Alto Santa Maria – Espírito Santo
Fernando lives in the hills of the state of Espírito Santo but he speaks Pomeranian better than he speaks Portuguese. The children in this region spend one week in school and the next helping their parents plant and harvest vegetables and grains. Since he was little, he has learned to use tools and build his own toys. Fernando, now 13 years old, builds with precision this little car that fits up to 4 small kids.
It took 3 days for the car to be ready. Three silent days, with the attention focused on doing rather than talking.
He uses only manual tools, and his knowledge comes from watching the adults and building with them.
The entire body is needed for the cuts to be precise during the construction of this little car.
Wood, rubber and iron are used as the raw materials.
Fernando, persistent and detailed, would take apart what wasn’t good and rebuild everything until it was just the way he wanted.
These types of cars are very common in the community of Alto Santa Maria, and the boys get together to race each other on the dirt roads.
